Executive Mansion, Monrovia – In the early hours of December 18, 2024, fire broke out at Liberia’s historic Capitol Building, the seat of the country’s Legislative Branch of government.

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., in an address to the nation, expressed deep sadness and frustration over the devastating incident, describing it as a significant blow to Liberia’s democracy and unity.

The President shared his sympathies with the Legislature and extended gratitude to the brave firefighters, volunteers, and law enforcement officers who worked tirelessly to contain the blaze. He underscored the need for unity and resilience during this challenging time.

“The Capitol Building has stood as a powerful symbol of our democracy, national unity, and source of national pride since its opening in 1957,” he recalled, assuring that “While its destruction is disheartening, I urge all Liberians to remain steadfast, united, and committed to rebuilding this institution.”

President Boakai also announced key directives to address the situation:
He instructed the security agencies to expedite their investigation into the cause of the fire. He further directed the Ministry of Public Works and the General Services Agency to conduct an immediate assessment to determine the extent of the damage.

Despite the somber atmosphere occasioned by the incident, the President shared uplifting news regarding Liberia’s governance achievements.

The Liberian Chief Executive revealed that Liberia has been awarded a second Compact by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) due to the country’s outstanding performance in governance and development. This development, he noted, will unlock significant resources for addressing critical growth constraints in Liberia.

President Boakai reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to the rule of law, democracy, and good governance.

The Liberian Leader went on to condemn violence in all forms, warning that anyone found culpable for acts of sabotage or intimidation will face the full weight of the law.
